Snowboots, the Survivor

Snowboots came in as an extremely shy stray that trusted no humans. When I first some him in the adoptable cat room, I was warned he would not be the warm and cuddly feline like Boo or Lucy.

I made my way to his bottom-level corner cage and saw this white cat crouched behind his litter box, his eyes carefully watching me. I slowly opened the cage door and started talking to him as he immediately tried to crouch even further down, and further into the corner.

I sat there for about ten minutes, where we could just watch each other. I didn't reach in, he was obviously not going to welcome my hand. Uncomfortable with people, being aggressively friendly wasn't going to work with Snowboots.

The next week I came in and saw Snowboots again in his cage, but no longer hiding in the corner. He probably witnessed the other cats getting taken out of their cages by these mysteriously gentle humans and coming back unscathed and calm. Maybe he felt it was time to try venturing out, because he let me open his door and pick him up. He was tense as I carried him to the socializing room and he was tense when I put him next to the room's largest cat scratcher.

It only took another ten minutes for Snowboots to approve of his new surroundings and permit me to scratch behind his ears. It didn't take much longer for him to be comfortable with getting a complete kitty body massage. Not much more time passed until he shoved himself in my lap and couldn't get close enough to me to satisfy his need for human attention.

Snowboots has turned out to be the ultimate cat lap that I thought he was the exact opposite of. He's proven everyone wrong with his new-found extreme, snuggly attitude. He will be the most giving and grateful adopted cat that has ever been adopted. Go to the Napa County Animal Shelter to check him out!

Tortiseshell Tabitha

Tabitha is clearly one of the most distinct and beautiful kitties at the shelter. Her black and tan mixed coat and her be-speckled eyes make her unusual and alluring.

Tabitha is 13 years old and clearly likes a slower pace of living. She walks around with patience and a little bit of timidness at first. Once she's gotten used to you, she starts making uncertain mews, as if asking for permission to make a sound.

She may take her time wandering about, but she knows where to go for a good head or ear scratch. She'll look back at you, meow questioningly, and promptly start the trek over to your hands.

I can easily see Tabitha becoming a lazy housecat who adores sunbathing by windows and stretching on beds. In addition to being a calm and collected feline, she'll be quite the art piece walking around your house!

Lavender: The Energetic Ballerina

This lovely lady is no ordinary feline. She may have a precious exterior and begging eyes, but a good 5 minutes of watching her and you know there's a little bit of calculated crazy underneath. What you first notice are her petite frame, skinny limbs, and soft walk. If only Lavender turned out her feet when she walked, you could swear she was a prima ballerina ready to attach an offending toy.

As she gingerly walks around the kitty play room, Lavender is as curious and playful as a baby kitten. At two years old I wasn't expecting her to have maintained many kitten-like tendencies, but if one little thing catchers the corner of her eye, she immediately stalks it. She likes to hide behind scratching posts and chairs to monitor her prey (likely a ball), then wiggles her behind, and *pounce* she has made a capture!!

Lavender is so playful and with so much energy, it's no surprised she is such a svelte kitty, always ready for a runway. She will keep you entertained for hours with her youthful antics and pouncing ways!

A Sad Truth

I really need to invest into a camera of my own, because I haven't been able to keep the chronicles of my ventures properly documented. Anyway, what I want to write about today is something really hit me super deeply. I had met Kelly and she had told me the good news that there had been a cat adoption, and there was a new face to see. I was really excited. I get to the cat room to greet the wonderful new face. My heart stops. I recognize this face. This face belongs to the cat that my neighbors had been pet sitting a year ago. There is no way I could ever forget that little cats face. I take her out of the pen, I read her chart and see that she is just the right age to be the cat who I think she is. As soon as I hear her meow, it's all set in.

I get her in the play room and begin to pet her and everything she does tells me it's her. She was just so happy to be out of her cage and to have some interaction. I never had a doubt in my mind that it was her. You can't forget a cat like her. Why haven't I called her by a name yet? It's because she still hasn't received one. When she was being pet sit by my neighbors, her name was Luke. We used to think she was a he, until we kept noticing that my neighbor was calling her a she. Luke is a strange name for a little girl, but that was the name her owner had chosen. Sadly, now she is without a home.

While reading her charts, I saw that her status said stray. I was a little relieved. I thought that perhaps she had gotten out of where ever it is that she was living and that her owner just hadn't found her yet. I had read that she had been brought in on June 1st, but I try to stay optimistic. I spent what time I could with Luke (currently without a name) as I could to make her feel safe and secure, and then I moved along with my day and took out other cats. I had four cats out today and felt pretty successful. I couldn't wait to get home and talk to my neighbors. I saw one of the employees and told her the situation, and that's where my happy relief fell short. She informed me that "Luke" had been surrendered. She had also just given birth to a litter of kittens. It was impossible to believe, but I knew it was true. I worry what happened to the other cat that she been with when I knew her as a kitten, whether he is back there too waiting for his chance at adoption.

I think the most important thing to learn from this is to spay/neuter your pets. It's horrible to think that there are so many unwanted animals out there that are stuck in shelters because no matter how great the shelter is, the shelter is not the same thing as a home. It hurts that I had seen this sweet little kitty start to grow into a young adult, and now I see that fate has reunited us in the last place that I would want to see her. I can only hope that she is quickly adopted! I'll be sure to post pictures of her when I get access to a camera, and to update everyone on her name!

Update: ADOPTED 7/2/2010!! The Dressy Gentleman

Tux wears his fancy suit for any and every occasion. Whether it be attacking the scratch post, rolling on the floor, or begging for love, Tux is ready for a show.

I’ve taken Tux out of his cage twice now and I have a pretty clear idea of what he likes. He likes adventure. He likes getting loved. Tux is so eager to get out of my arms and into the fun room, he almost squirms out of his suit. When he jumps to the floor his excitement overtakes him as he checks out everything in the room and can’t decide what to play with first.

Tux is a super slinky cat that appears to have taken ballet classes since birth. One of my favorite things about it him is that despite his natural grace, Tux isn’t afraid to follow his curiosity and risk looking silly. It’s an awesome quirk. This fancy feline loves to jump to the top of the cat scratcher and back, but needs to know that someone is always there to scratch his head and watch him play.

That actually seems to be a common trait among all the shelter cats. Some like their independence more than others, but they all want to know their human is there to love them. It’s what they’ve been without for a long time and the idea of losing that security is always in the back of their minds, until they get adopted. I wish I could adopt them all and finalize my Crazy Cat Lady persona, but I can’t. That’s where all of you come in!

Baby Boo

Say hello to Boo! Boo and I bonded the first day I volunteered at the shelter. I can't believe it's taken me this long to write about him. On my first day I opened the cage next to Boo to pet a different cat. While petting the other feline, I feel a little *pat pat* on my arm and then something pulling my sleeve. I turn to look and there was baby Boo, arm outstretched with his little paw on my shirt, mewing at me for attention with longing in his bright green eyes.

The next time I came in both the cat socializing rooms were occupied so I held Boo in my arms. He automatically slipped into a rocking baby position, soaking up the head scratches. He purred and purred and twisted in my arms to get his back scratched as well. In a matter of seconds his purring slowed and eventually stopped completely. I look down to see Boo had fallen asleep in my arms.

Ever time I see the cats I make sure to stop by and say hello to Boo. He always looks up and softly mews until I melt and have to at least hear his precious purr. In the socializing room, Boo is like a giant kitten. He's excited to see all the toys and cat scratchers, try them out, then roll all over the floor for giggles. And once he's worn himself out he hops onto your lap for some more head scratches before drifting off to a purring sleep with his favorite companion, you.

Lucy the Lap Cat

I have a huge soft spot for Lucy. She looks like she fell in a bucket of orange paint and then someone spattered her with black paint. Her hair is at odd lengths and she has a permanent disapproving facial expression. Somehow, the combination of all this has made her into the most lovable and beautiful lap cat.

I believe Lucy could sit on your lap for hours as you scratch behind her ears, her face, and her little belly. She purrs with intent and goes straight to you for attention. She is a pleasantly content feline.

Once she's gotten comfortable with you, she will go exploring for a bit. The scratch post? She thinks its pretty fun. The rope with feathers on the end? She must destroy it. Lucy is a playful cat when she wants to be, but easily reverts back to getting scratches and purring happily.

Don't let her gentle nature deter you from giving her a good hard scratching, she will adore you for it!

Napoleon Boneapart.

I've always had a special spot in my heart for smaller dogs because they remind me of cats. They are for a matter of fact nothing like cats at all. However, it was always the size that caught my eye. With that said, I've always had a love for the Pomeranian breed! Who would have known that that love could extend to the big, blonde and beautiful Napoleon! Napoleon is not your average-sized Pomeranian due to the fact that he is a mix breed. Even though he comes in extra large for a Pomeranian, this beautiful medium sized dog is truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Napoleon is much like myself in that he is a ham for affection. As we set out for our walk, we shared tips of the trade. While I use the whine and pout approach to get attention, Napoleon uses the classic tail wag and face lick. I only wish I would have thought of that sooner!

Napoleon is a fantastic dog who knows how to follow his leader. Napoleon doesn't tug on his leash, and he doesn't yap for that matter either. He is a really just a well-behaved pupizen looking for a new home to call his own!

Napoleon is house broken, and needs regular grooming, but who wouldn't with such voluptuous locks!

Remember, it's always important to make pet adoption your first option! Napa County Animal Shelter is reaching dog capacity, so they are going to be offering special deals to help alleviate the problem, and to help find more homes for these loving, adoptable pets! More information can be found here at the Napa Valley Register's website. This is where we ask you, our small band of followers, to help promote our animals!

Update: ADOPTED!! The Patient One

Norah is one of the best surprises I've had in a long time.

As I passed along the dog cages, every single pup was barking or jumping with excitement over the prospect of getting walked. The only one who didn't jump or make any noise was Norah. She sat there quietly, leaned up against the side of the cage, and just looked at me with patient, but somewhat sad eyes. Norah has been at the shelter the longest and I wonder if she's lost some hope of being chosen for a permanent home.

When she saw me opening the cage, her ears immediately perked up and she got ready. We marched out of the shelter and Norah happily and lightly tugged toward the outdoors. It didn't take long for her get into walking mode. She was so happy to be outside and with friendly humans that she never pulled on the leash. Sure, she got interested in plants or bugs, but she responded so easily to her name and a light pull in the right direction.

When we stopped to for a short break and to take some pictures of the gorgeous pooch, she rolled over and scratched her back against the concrete. She wiggled her butt and let her tongue hang out while I snapped away. As you can see, Norah is not only extremely photogenic, but she is extremely joyful.

Norah also obeyed basic commands perfectly. She is young, but very smart and quick. When I took a treat out she instantly sat before I even said a word! When I lowered the treat, she instinctively lied down. I was so proud of Norah and all the good training she's had. She is incredibly gentle and good with people and loves being around them. We passed many walkers and cyclists and not once did she do more than glance in their general direction. She really savored every moment with us, and I am so grateful I got to spend time with her today. Norah is going to make some owner immensely happy.

Update: Adopted!! Nemo's Discovery

Nemo the puppy may be the happiest dog ever. He's so excited to look around and smell every plant and rock that he passes. He's excellent on a leash as he curiously discovers this strange world. He trusts you to take him in the right direction because he's naturally that loyal. Every other minute or so he'll glance back to make sure you're still there, keeping him company on his new adventure as his trusty sidekick.

While walking Nemo, I noticed his curiosity did not interfere with his safety. He greets new people in a very friendly manner, but doesn't get too close unless they are also friendly. Every now and again he might want to jump up, but he is learning very quickly and easily to be patient for attention. He is also learning to sit on command. On just the one walk, he was almost completely trained!

Nemo is young, full of joyful energy, and very well-behaved. He is going to grow into such a gentleman that would make any human feel proud!

The Jungle Cat

Meet Damien the Tiger Cat, who, as you can see, has beautiful Tiger stripes. What you can't see is his beautiful Tiger rawr. Yes, indeed, Damien will beg for your attention from across the room! Every time I go into the cat room at the shelter, I can hear him meowing from his cage for attention. Now, all the cats of course want attention, but Damien meows beyond the rest.

He meows because he knows he has lots of love to give, and everyone deserves some of Damien's love. He's always wants to know you're there. When I sat down to play with him, he weaved between the chair legs and meowed for head scratches. He's torn between getting constant scratches and venturing into new sights and smells.

Damien has the most adorable habit of getting a few scratches, walking several feet away for exploring, and then he stops. Quick as lightning he whips his head back around to see your face and, "Meow!" he's trotting back to your scratching hands for some more love! He gives people all the love they deserve and is a wonderful companion.

Damien is an ever-loving cat with his Tiger stripes, Tiger meow, and fluffy Tiger tail.

Update: ADOPTED!! Brandy, Your Baby

This labrador retriever/beagle mix really does enjoy long walks on the beach. We were lucky enough to take her for a walk along the river where she trotted exactly in step with us. Not once did she pull on the leash or stray from the walk. She looked around, taking in the view, and joyfully pranced.

Brandy liked sticking with her human companions as she happily walked with that big grin on her face. She loves being around people and has the sweetest temperament, awaiting love and affection. I’ve had so much fun walking the shelter dogs, but Brandy might be my favorite because of her loving nature and friendly face.

Being part lab means she is an excellent family dog, exemplified by my own testimony of her joyful and pleasant disposition. Brandy is also part beagle, which tend to lack inherited health problems, another plus! She is the perfect mix.

Update: ADOPTED!! Tai the Charmer.

Anyway, this charmer is very playful and active. He loves to chase the balls around and will gladly give you a foot massage with his head. He has some of the most unique markings I have ever seen on a cat! Just today he was trying to play with his neighbor through the cage, but this was not well received. Did this bring his spirits down though? Not at all! He was still just as happy and playful, despite the rejection of an unrequited love.

I should be working on my online homework for Political Science, but I am really having a good time posting to the masses that we have yet to acquire about these awesome animals! I'll try not to deviate too much from animals, but every now and then I might slip something in between the posts. Anyway, I just figured out I suffer from Ailurophilia. Ailurophilia is the "love of cats." My boyfriend would start squawking at me if he saw that one, but he is wonderful and supports my animal passions, even if he won't fess up to it on a public forum.

Did you all know that if your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you? However, if her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her. Cats are truly amazing and they are so FUNNY. They really do some of the silliest things ever.

The Best Eating Companion

Originally uploaded by dreamakerk

I'll be honest, one of my best friends is indeed my cat. Tiger is a big-boned feline who spends his time eating at every waking moment, sleeping on my bed, and rolling around in the driveway in front of a car pulling in the garage. He's fat, fluffy, and full of love. Why wouldn't he be my best friend?

Besides my obvious enjoyment from watching his fat buns waddle around, I know that he is one happily spoiled cat. He doesn't have to worry about getting food (although he eats like he does), having a safe place to sleep, or someone to give him the attention he craves. And I honestly believe that every cat (and dog, and rabbit, and hedgehog, etc...) deserves that kind of happiness and security.

The Napa County Animal Shelter provides safety and security for animals who aren't as lucky to have a permanent home, yet. They deserve permanent, loving homes and I want to make the most out of the hopefully short time they are at the shelter. That means petting and playing with cats, walking dogs, and ogling rabbits. But it also means giving them exposure to the public so they have a better chance of finding permanent homes and permanent families.

Most of my posts will be about the animals and their unique and lovable personalities, but I might expand to other interests as well. For now, I leave you with Tiger and his fluffy belly.

Murray the Great.

It's time to start this blog off right and talk about the animals that reside at the Napa County Animal Shelter! Provided in the link is information on the pets there and the costs for adoption. Please, always make adoption your first choice!

Let us begin! This is the ever-so-lovely Murray! He's truly endearing, with his semi-erect ear. Murray is a 3 year-old, black and tan chihuahua mix. As I get to know him more and more, I will continue to update, but what I can tell you about this boy is that he is a great leash dog! He was very calm the entire time I took him to out, and was very friendly! Hopefully, I won't even need to get to know him because he'll get adopted fast! Murray would make a fun companion because he's not a leash-puller and he likes to run with you! He'll be the jogging partner that never flakes on you.

Here's a fun fact! Did you know that Chihuahua’s brains are the largest of any breed, when compared to the size of their bodies? Also, most Chihuahuas are born with floppy ears that stand up as they get older. I guess Murray only half heard this fact!

Check out these other dashing photos of this handsome man!

My Great Love of the 21st Century.

I have created for myself a mission: I want to spread knowledge and information about the animals in my local shelter. I want to help them get adopted into loving homes where they will be loved and appreciated. I want to raise awareness about Wandering Rose, an arts activism organization that I am apart of. Lastly, I want to post really awesome things I find concerning the fields of science I'm interested, mainly physics and chemistry.

I never kept a journal as a kid, and I've always associated blogging and journal writing to be one in the same. Whenever I would make an attempt at recording my eclectic thoughts onto paper, I would return to my post, realize how ridiculously childish I was being, and then rip it into shreds.

Why do I bore you with this superfluous information? It's because I'm having a revelation! The name of this blog really says a lot: The Art of Compassion. I have many interests that include animals, arts, community activism, and science. I wanted to come up with a clever way of incorporating them all into one clever title, and this is what I came up with. Take it or leave, if you don't like it you can always email me at dontcare@wanderingrose.org.

Honestly though, if I can raise awareness about just one animal, then I know that I've done something right. So to whomever may stumble upon this blog, I welcome you to a scope of my world!
